Lhasa

Tashi Deleh!

We are in Tibet! It´s wonderfull here. Despite the Chinese oppression the atmosphere lingers in the mounains, the restaurated monasteries and most of all in the people, who hold on to their culture so strongly. We take it easy because of the altitude (3700 m) but enjoy the hospitality of this people without a land of their own.

The Potala
This former palace of the Dalai Lama has a strange enchanting effect on us. This immens classical tibetan building rests upon a hill, looking over Lhasa. Nothing is symmetric and still this place is in perfect balance. Together with groups of pelgrims we climb the many stairs to the heart of this palace. Making pictures is a pleasure. After every corner there is a new interesting look on the building. And all around there are the snow-topped mountains! Upstairs on the first courtyard we have the feeling of standing on a ship: blue sky, strong wind, wavering flags and outercurtains.
Through a solemn gate we enter the inner labyrinth of the potala. Here we see steep stairs, corridors, temples, libraries, meditationrooms, stupa´s, a meeting hall... Everything painted and decorated in ochre, claret, blue, red, green. The pelgrims say their prayers, burn yakbuttercandles and make prostrations.
We take the slippery steps down at the northern side and follow the pelgrims on their way to Bakhor Square.

Can you keep an eye on 10 march? On this day the tibetans remember a failed uprising against the Chinese government. There will be worldwide actions, especially now, with the olympic interest for China. This land wants to be modern, which it is as we experience. But there are some things that are just not right. Like human rights for minorities and freedom of speech. The tibetans must suffer the hardest... We notice ourselves that the so called free internet doesn´t give objective information concerning Tibet and that the media are modelled.

By the way, we have no problem with the Chinese, very friendly people!
